Energy Complex
The fuel and energy sector is one of the core structural elements of the economy of Ukraine.
It consists of the power, fuel, coal enterprises and petroleum industries.The power sector includes thermal, nuclear and hydropower plants, as well as enterprises dealing with transmission and distribution of power.
Development trends
- Ukraine has excess capacity of electricity production. Part of the produced energy (2-5%) is exported to Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Russia, Belarus, and Moldova.
- In 2010, exports of Ukrainian electricity amounted to about 4 billion kilowatt-hours.
- Declared intention to sell the state-owned shares of energy companies “Zahidnenergo” and “Kyivenergo”.
- The number of companies, engaged in alternative energy, is increasing (hydro-, solar energy, as well as energy of wind and biomass).
- Increased activity of the state in search of partners in the development of oil-and gas-bearing deposits of the Black Sea shelf and unconventional gas sources.
Why invest in this industry?
- Preferable conditions for investment in renewable energy – “green tariff” preferences;
- The potential store of the Black Sea shelf is 2.3 billion tons of equivalent fuel (according to “Naftogaz Ukraine”);
- The supply of the unconventional gas (shale gas and coaled methane gas) in Ukraine amounts to 30 trillion cubic meters, including shale gas – about 5 trillion cubic meters (according to “Naftogaz Ukraine”).
